We are all guilty of beating a word (or a few words) to death in our daily lives. Those words that seem to flow so easily in conversation, text messages, and blog posts that we sometimes just can't quit saying.
like
yeah
totally(sometimes all 3 together "like yeah, totally" - I make myself cringe)
actually
so (or soooooo)
ooh
sure (sometimes instead of you're welcome - bad, rude habit)
awesome
freaking (I don't say THE f-word, and use this as a replacement)
shit (pretty much the only "swear word" I use, and I sure do use it often)
whatever
seriously
Words I never, ever say (some are not even words, most I feel too old and uncool to pull off correctly, others are just weird to me)
epic (when we start using this to describe everything - like epic nap - then epic is no longer epic)
awesomesauce (I will use it as 2 words, sometimes together, like "jalapeno yogurt dip makes an awesome sauce for sandwiches")
totes (kind of committed to totally - see above)
moist (just makes me think eww)
perhaps (too fake, give me maybe)
stoked
dude
(the two above are used by my husband regularly. In his defense, he did grow up in Southern CA in the 80's)
hubby (speaking of him)
discombobulated
gentle
interwebs or internets (or adding an 's' or 'z' to the end of things or a 'the' in front of things, like 'the intenets')
sexy
What words do you overuse? not use?
I really need to quit all of my list.

You nailed me with "totally, seriously, awesome, stoked, and dude. But in my defense I'm stoked to live with three totally awesome dudes....seriously! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh my--this was funny! I should do a list of my own!
ReplyDeletewords I use too much: F**K (the real one), sure, like, really??, pul-leese, shut-up! (not telling someone to actually shut up, but as in, you're kidding!), whatever, seriously (they make my list too). I am an embarrassment to the English language.... Thanks for pointing that out.
Oh good lord I HATE, abhor, resent, absolutely vomit at "Awesomesauce".
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a "stoked" or "dude" over-user. Only...
What's wrong with "gentle"?
HAH! I overuse all the same words. ACTUALLY, my 5 year old son went on a bender starting every sentence with ACTUALLY and it drove me nuts; hmmmm, wonder where he got it from.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one with an aversion to the word "moist" - you are not alone.
Oh, so many words on this list that I use way too much. Totally, seriously and actually. I also say dude. My other one is "ya know". Strange, I know... ya know?
ReplyDeleteHate awesomesauce, totes, etc. Makes my ears bleed.
(This is going to sound pretentious but...) I didn't realize how often I say "so" until I started speaking french again. Every other freaking word is the french word for "so." I noticed that I was saying it a ton and then realized that I do the same in English.
ReplyDeleteWord I'll never use? Amazeballs. No.
